“Every environment is different, so it’s important to think about that first—sun, shade, wind, soil conditions (clay or sand). Here in the Rockford area there are belts of very sandy soil amid the clay. Then consult your local garden center. They will carry plants that work in your area. By planning first, you’ll save time and money.”

"My first advice is to start small; you may have a vision but it should be quality over quantity. Preparation and planning are important. Decide what you want to grow; then do a little research to determine the light and moisture requirements and make sure the location you choose will work. Prepare the soil properly, plant, maintain, and enjoy. Remember that your local independent garden center is there to help you." |
"I would suggest that you start by finding some plants that you like, and then find out if they will grow in our area. Read magazines for information, but note that the best magazines are local; national magazines will show some plants that don’t grow well here. Ultimately, the only way to learn it to garden is to get dirty and do it yourself." |
